The office was in an uproar when Maritza arrived. Men she didn’t recognize seemed to be everywhere. Some looked like hard-core mercenaries complete with holstered weapons. Others were obviously computer nerds and technicians.

These dudes looked serious.

She plopped behind her desk in the bullpen next to Velma, who looked terrified. She was mindlessly picking off her black nail polish with nervous fingers. Shit, Velma was typically so chill. Not much rattled her.

“Velma, what’s going on?”

“The senator’s new security contractors.” Her reply was robotic.

“That’s good. Right? They can help you with the system.” Maritza reached out to take Velma’s hand, stopping her from picking at her already ravaged nails. “Why are you freaking out?”

“When they checked the server, they found some kind of device. They think it's me.”

That explained why the transmission had died. Bet those guys swarmed in bright and early and took command of the server room. It’s what she’d do.

“Hey, it’s not you. You’ll be fine.”

“I don’t feel fine. I’m the only one with access.” Velma held out a trembling hand to show Maritza how rattled she was.

“That’s not true. Mike, the senator, hell, a janitor might have the code for the server room.”

Velma snorted. “I need a shot of tequila.”

“What about some coffee instead?”

Velma nodded. Maritza squeezed her hand before getting up to get the coffee.

Her life had just gotten way more complicated. These security guys were going to make getting to Mike’s computer almost impossible. They were everywhere installing cameras, firewalls, and even new locks. She tripped over half a dozen of them getting coffee.

When she passed Velma her cup, she looked at the scar on her left wrist. She’d only survived her time as the senator’s mistress because Eric Robb had intervened. It was time for her to pay it forward. She had to access the rest of Mike’s conversation with the hitman, or some poor woman would die.

By four-thirty, she was no closer to getting on Mike’s computer. Fuck, she should already be on her way to Montana. Or in a perfect world, deciding what to wear on her date with Drew tonight.

In thirty minutes, they would send her and all the other employees home. Outlandish and desperate plans to access Mike’s office flew through her mind. None had a chance of working, or she’d have already tried them.

Taking her purse, she headed for the bathroom. She dumped her bag on the counter and riffled through the random crap, dying for an idea. Old receipts and tampons weren’t helpful. She scooped up a book of matches.

A little dustbin fire wasn’t going to work. It had to be impressive enough to scare even the security guys into evacuating.

In the bathroom supply closet, she found a few aerosol cans of stainless-steel cleaner. On the back of the can, in big red letters, it stated: Warning Flammable. Hello distraction!

Feeling like MacGyver, she got to work building a small fire pit in the stall right under the smoke alarm. The wadded-up paper towels and cardboard from the supply cabinet lit easily with her matches.
